ENGLISH – 2nd trimester – Day 32

WARMUP:

·         People who have not read Romeo & Juliet often think of Juliet as a young, innocent little girl (13 to be exact). However, those of us who read the tragedy know she is much more DYNAMIC and complicated than that. (CCSS = RL 9-10.3)

o   List things from the play that prove that Juliet is a DYNAMIC and complicated person.

·(Act 3, Scene 5)

o   JULIET:

§  Indeed, I never shall be satisfied

§  With Romeo, till I behold him— dead—

§  Is my poor heart so for a kinsman vex'd.

o

·Next, find this quote from Juliet and answer the following 3 questions:

o   “Well, thou hast comforted me marvelous much.” (Act 3, Scene 5) - (CCSS = RL 9-10.2)

1.      Who is Juliet speaking to?

2.      Look at the big speech just above this quote…what was recommended to Juliet?

3.      What is the subtext of this line...in other words, what do you imagine Juliet was thinking while she was saying this?

REMIND CLASS: Tomorrow, Tuesday, you will have a test on Act 3 that lists a bunch of quotes from Act 3 and you will be asked to identify the character who said it…

Using any of the scenes from ACT 3 (pgs. 873 – 905) find an important quote from any character and write it on one of the whiteboards…no repeats. Do NOT add the character’s name to your quote when you write it down.

·         Take a picture of BOTH SIDES of your completed boards for the classroom blog; you can review it over and over tonight.

·         After everyone has added their quotes, number their quotes on the whiteboards…then have each student number a paper (1-28?) and, without using their books, they are to write down which character said each quote.

o   (This exercise serves as a pretest to Tuesday’s actual test.)
