ENGLISH – HOURS 1 & 3 – Day 44
·         Pick up “Exam Review Guide”
·         No vocabulary test this week.
·         Check your 2 test scores (from Friday)
·         WATCH this INCREDIBLE video J about “me or I”:
§  Learned “trick” to identify which pronoun to use in sentences using “I” and “me” –
§  Discussed the problems with “between” sentences and plural verb sentences (were – was)
§  Write a sentence that uses “you and I” properly in a sentence. Then use “you and me” properly in another.
·         On page 6 of your Literary Terms packet, study the “Methods for arranging detail” section. (Chronological order, compare, contrast, spatial order, cause and effect, order of importance)
·         TAKE out paper for a few notes:
·         Make note of the S.A.M.A.N rule (Some, All, Most, Any, None) – these 5 words can be used as either PLURAL or SINGULAR – depending on what the pronoun stands for (usually found in the prepositional phrase)
§  i.e.
§  SOME of the paper IS blue. Vs. SOME of the papers ARE wet.
§  MOST of the book WAS thrilling. MOST of the books WERE thrilling.
§  However, this rule ONLY works with the SAMAN pronouns…not others…
·         i.e. You do NOT look at the prepositional phrase when the pronoun is singular…
o   INCORRECT: EACH of the actors forgot THEIR lines.
o   CORRECT: EACH of the actors forgot HIS lines.
§  “each” is singular and gets a singular pronoun
o   INCORRECT: ONE of the birds built THEIR nest there.
o   CORRECT: ONE of the birds built ITS nest there.

o   Hand out 4-column singular/singular possessive/plural/plural possessive
§  Complete the following: 1. plural column 2. Singular possessive column
·         How many exceptions did you find in each of these 2 columns?
·         Read “Thank You, M’am” which takes place in the Harlem section of the borough of Manhattan (Literature book pgs. 134 – 140)
·         In 3 sentences minimum, besides “thank you” what does Roger wish he would have said to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones?

Pickup copy of EXAM REVIEW GUIDE
Finish questions 1-7 (scene 1 only) + 1 – 22 (Act 3)
ANNOUNCEMENT: Tomorrow, you will have a test on Act 3 that lists a bunch of quotes from Act 3 and you will be asked to identify the character who said it… 

  
 
 
 
 
Memorize your lines of Shakespeare for your recital on Monday, February 23
Explain: FINAL PROJECT - Anchor Question/Statement
Before you begin your project…
  1. Choose ONE of the 23 themes – decide whether your group will try to prove that it is true or false.
  2. Find MOMENTS from R&J to memorize to prove your theme true (or false). Each person in the group must memorize a minimum of 10 lines of Romeo & Juliet (no more than 20)
  3. Decide which moments to memorize.
  4. Argue it. 
    1. EXAMPLE: Parental love can be dangerous. Love at first sight is dangerous. Romantic love is only appropriate for people over 21.
REMINDER:
    1. Your scenes must be TYPED. You can cut and paste them from http://www.shakespeare-navigators.com/romeo/SceneTextIndex.html
    2. BEGIN: Practice your 10-line speech from Romeo & Juliet for Monday’s recital 
You must turn in a TYPED copy of your script AND you must tell me WHO is going to say each line. For example, Benvolio will be recited by Carol. Romeo will be recited by Tomas.
R & J FINAL PROJECT RUBRIC (worth 35 points)
**You may NOT give your recital without a typed copy of your speech. **
10    points - SCRIPT - typed, theme, character/student name (Juliet/Frank)
5        points - THEME - your chosen lines CLEARLY support your theme
20    points - RECITAL - considerable effort shown in memorization of piece
ENGLISH homework – HOURS 4 & 5:
Complete the following:
·         Copy down your group’s lines for final project – each actor must memorize 10 minimum (no more than 20) based on a single theme.
