ENGLISH – HOURS 1, 3, 4 – Day 18

Open your book to page 1082 and answer the following questions:

1.       According to our textbook,

a.       What is another word for INCREDULITY?

b.       Explain why Telemachus is feeling such incredulity.

2.       What is dramatically ironic in this section?

3.       If the Greeks (from the time of The Odyssey) believed that without gods, man is nothingname an example from the story that confirms this belief.

·         Review the list...“What’s Most Important in a Friend?” Write down your TOP 5, in order of importance…1 = the most important thing…etc.

·         NEXT, choose 5 of the following 11 statements and…

1.       …write them down, word for word.

2.       After each of your 5 statements,

o    write DISAGREE next to ALL 5 of your statements.

3.       Without repeating the statement, write down 5 sentences (for each statement) that explains why some people feel this way about this issue. (25 sentences total)

    1. Violence can solve problems.
    2. Boyfriends and girlfriends are more important than family.
    3. There are times when secrets must be told.
    4. Teenagers don’t know what true love really feels like.
    5. Parents should have the final say in the people that you date.
    6. You are the pilot of your own life. There is no greater force determining your outcome. You determine your own outcome.
    7. You should know someone for at least a year before you marry them.
    8. Deceiving people is all right if it is for a good cause in the long run.
    9. Parents are ultimately responsible for their children’s choices.
    10. “Luck” is a figment of someone’s imagination; there is no such thing as luck.
    11. Love at first sight is possible.

PLAYWRITING – Day 13

·         NOTE: Tomorrow I will COLLECT 2 biographical sketches (protagonist and antagonist)

1.      Make a list of 5 concrete goals. These should be wants or needs or desires. They may NOT be abstract.

a.       For example:

                                                  i.      to have money to go to the movies

                                                ii.      to go to Orlando FL on vacation during spring break

                                              iii.      to eat a real Italian food in Italy

2.      Assign each of your 5 goals to a fictitious character.

3.      Next, create an action for each of your 5 goals above that tells us what kind of person the character is.

SAMPLE:

a.       Money

b.      A young boy

c.       A young boy steals a purse from an old lady.

REMEMBER: “Character is action; action is character.”

4.      Imagine that your 5 actions from step 3 (above) are criticized as “too weak.” Upgrade all 5 of your actions.

5.      For each of your 5 scenarios, create an obstacle.

6.      Choose your favorite scenario of the 5 and for homework, write a script that starts as close to the end as possible.

PLAYWRITING homework:

·         Finish script (#6 above) and turn in with 1-5 tomorrow.

·         NOTE: Tomorrow I will COLLECT 2 biographical sketches (protagonist and antagonist)
