ENGLISH - 1st trimester – Day 48
 
1.      Take out your 5 index cards. With a partner AT YOUR TABLE, determine
a.       Which sentence on your index cards is the THESIS STATEMENT
b.      How many TOPIC sentences do you have TOTAL (on all 5 cards)
                                                  i.      Where are they located on the cards?
2.      Return WHOOPIES papers
a.       Show PMR Rubric – or explain that “POEC” stands for Purpose, Organization, Evidence, Conventions
3.      Distribute list of transitions
a.       Add 7
4.      Add a title…(and underline it)
a.       Consider stealing words from your thesis statement (card 1) or information from card 5?
5.      On card 2 or 3, find the words “According to the film Human Footprint (2008)…”
a.       Make sure it is followed by a quote from the film
b.      Make sure Human Footprint is UNDERLINED
6.      GO TO LAB 140 – Type your 5 paragraphs
7.      Show how to “search document”/FIND
a.       Look for contractions, “you”, “I”,

  1. The paper does NOT use any contractions (don’t, can’t, won’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t etc.)
  2. No informal tone – “OMG” or “okay” or “well” etc.)
  3. The last sentence of paragraph 1 is a thesis that states the problem and is underlined
  4. The first sentence of paragraphs 2, 3, 4 are premises (topic sentences) and are underlined.
  5. 7 different transitions (no repeats) are CIRCLED and are at THE BEGINNING of sentences
  6. One direct quotation from the article is BOLDED in paragraph 2 or 3…and begins with “According to the article “How dumb can we get?” (The Week, Feb. 2008), …”
  7. Except for paragraph 4, paper does not use the words: you, your, we, us, I, me, myself
  8. Paper is 5 paragraphs long
  9. Paper is double-spaced
  10. Paper appears to be in 12 pt. Times New Roman font
  11. Nothing is underlined in paragraph 5.
  12. Title of paper is centered
  13. Name, date, hour are in the HEADER of paper
  14. Pages are numbered (in the FOOTER)
